words and recipes
i learned the word for lemon in chichewa. i went to the market. i saw what looked like lemons, which i never remember seeing before, as if the word had made them appear. the man selling them said ‘mandinu.’ and i said ‘mandinu!’ and then i bought four. then i found i recipe i liked, of course there are no measuring devices and i’d never made this particular recipe before, but i mixed together a tea cake batter judging on consistency and taste. one of the cooks, who’s actually a really amazing as a chef and makes awesome things like doughnuts and cinnamon rolls, was so please that i was in the kitchen and was like ‘lemon cake!’ and then he told me the consistency looked good and made sure that i knew how to flour a pan (i do. i am my mother’s daughter.). he did remind me to put water in the cups that were empty, which i had a vague sense that i should do but would have forgotten. and now they are in the oven, my malawian lemon tea cakes. now we wait.
