See you on the other side

Tomorrow at 8:00am, I will begin the process of dismantling a fellow human being who, in life, donated their body in death so that I could begin winding my way toward being a good doctor.

On a tour of Brown’s medical school, a student told me that on her first day of anatomy, she cried behind her goggles as she made the first cuts and stripped away the first skin from fascia. We will all have our own, unique responses to the first day. I don’t know what mine will be, but I thank this student for showing me that you can be a bit human and still proceed to love the human body.
